About Kara

Kara got her start in photography at young age and holds an Associates Degree from Harrisburg Area Community College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts, both in photography.

Since graduating, she has worked at Conte Photography (2007-present, owner 2016 to present) and the Patriot News (2007-2010). She’s had the opportunity to work with some wonderful mentors and photographers at both places. She’s had the honor of receiving a few different awards as well as being published in the Patriot News, Glady’s, Blue Mountain Living, Life in Forest Hills, Harrisburg Magazine, and Central Penn Parent.

She has a background in all types of photography and likes to continue offering many different types of photography to suit whatever her clients need.

My passion for art and photography started young.  I always enjoyed snapping photos of whatever I could find.  I never thought about it as a career until I was a junior in high school and had my senior pictures taken.  I was at that time in my life, where I was trying to decide what I was going to do.  I had so much fun with the photographer that I turned to my mom and said: “I think I want to do this for a living.”  My darling mother in return, said to me, “What, be a model?”  I said no, and explained that I think I would enjoy being a photographer.  I didn’t realize what a competitive and difficult path I had chosen for myself and bless my parents, they encouraged me (and paid) for me to follow my dreams.  My high school didn’t have much to offer as far as a photography education or even an elective class.  So, I forged my own path.  Finding teachers that dabbled and eventually getting an internship with a well known studio photographer in the area.  He shot families, children, weddings and so on.  Whatever people needed.  He taught me how to pose and work with people.  This was right on the cusp of digital photography so I had the joy of working with medium format and dabbling in the transition to digital.  After high school, I attended HACC (Harrisburg Area Community College).  HACC’s program was largely focused around art.  My time at HACC was amazing because it allowed me to experience a certain diversity in the photography program.  Some of my classmates were much older than me and in a different place in their lives.  It was incredible to see how this was expressed in their art.  Of course, I learned the important things I needed for photography (like developing film and working in a darkroom).  Like I said, important but I don’t use either of these anymore.  My wonderful parents said they would pay for a 4 year degree.  (I know, they are awesome).  I transferred from HACC to UArts (University of the Arts) for my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.  I learned many more important things here about lighting and composition.  Even digital photography as it was the early 2000s.

When I graduated, I eventually landed an awesome job at the Patriot-News in Harrisburg, PA.  I got to work under an amazing mentor here that taught me all sorts of important things about photography.  Although we did some photojournalism.  He and I were the advertising photo department.  We had a studio but we also had to go on-site and shoot wherever.  I could arrive at Harrisburg in the morning and have to go to Lancaster and Lebanon to meet and photograph the newspaper’s clients.  This was a lot of fun and I learned to think on my feet.
